GAME REPORT

Croatia Sneak Past Israel In Thriller

Ana Lelas (Croatia)
Veteran Ana Lelas iced the final result from the free-throw line

There was near unbearable tension down the stretch in Slavonski Brod as Croatia held their nerve to dig out a dramatic 76-73 Group F victory against Israel in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

Trailing by eight points with eight minutes to play, a late surge from the hosts swung the pendulum in their favour during crunch time as they just did enough to squeeze over the finishing line.

While Mirna Mazic gave Croatia the lead from the free-throw line with a couple of minutes remaining to complete their comeback, it was a go-ahead triple moments later from Emanuela Salopek which proved vital.

That made it a two-shot game and while Israel got to within a point heading into the final minute, veteran Ana Lelas showed her cool by sinking two foul shots to take victory with a few seconds remaining.

Not that this was the end of the action, since Croatia still had to survive a three-point attempt by Shay Doron as the guard tried to force overtime with a last-ditch effort.

Neither team had been able to make a significant run in a tight game that was always on a knife-edge, other than Israel getting themselves in a potential position to strike for the win early in the fourth quarter.

Jelena Ivezic fired 18 points and dished up five assists for the jubilant Croatians before eventually fouling out.

Liron Cohen starred for the visitors with 20 points including four triples from five attempts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Croatia vs. Israel

Adan Inbar, Israel Head Coach
"I would like to congratulate the Croatian team. It was a close game, decided in the last minute. I'm proud of the way we played. If there will be consistency in our game, we will achieve our goal in the end."

Liron Cohen, Israel
"I think we did not play our best game today. We had a good 3rd quarter, but eventually lost the game. Still, I am proud of my team. There are lots of games left to play and I do believe we will qualify for EuroBasket Women."

Braslav Turic, Croatia Head Coach
"The game was in supense until the very end. The Israeli team managed to impose on us their rhythm of play. It was not until the very end that we were able to achieve the goal we were preparing for. I would like to congratulate the Israeli team for a high quality performance, and also congratulations to my players on the win!"

Marija Rezan, Croatia
"Our group is not an easy one. We, as a team, have still not shown our real quality, but we managed to win in the end, although I do believe there were mistakes in our play."
