GAME REPORT

Croatia Edge Bulgaria On the Road

Jelena Ivezic (Croatia)
Jelena Ivezic led Croatia in their away win against Bulgaria
There was a debut win for recently installed Croatia head coach Braslav Turic as his team edged past Bulgaria 69-65 on the road in Group F of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

Picking up the reins on the eve of his nation's campaign, the play-caller watched his team win a clash of styles with their hosts, who relied on shooting the ball from long-range at almost every opportunity.

In stark contrast, Croatia pounded the ball inside and it was a strategy that eventually won the day as they cleaned up on the glass and posted a strong second-half display inside the paint.

Croatia always looked the more likely winners in the second-half of the game, with both teams enjoying spells of the lead in the first half.

Bulgaria managed to just about keep pace until midway through the third period, when leading 49-48, they couldn't stop Croatia from taking their game to a new level.

Led by the all-action Jelena Ivezic who finished with an eye-catching 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists, the visitors scored nine points without reply and it gave them a handy cushion for the remainder of the game.

Bulgaria tried to pull back level in the closing stages inspired by 21-point Radostina Dimitrova, but time elapsed on their comeback bid.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Bulgaria vs. Croatia

Iva Sliskovic, Croatia
Always the first game is the hardest game. We played on the road. The Bulgarian team played really well, they made some great shots. It was a hard-fought win, but we managed in the last quarter not to give them so many open shots. I am really happy that we won."

Braslav Turic, Croatia Head Coach
"It was hard game. We knew and expected this. We did a good job, especially on offence. At the end of the game our defence became better and tougher and helped us to victory."

Georgi Bozhkov, Bulgaria Head Coach
"There were some key moments in this game. We don't have such tall players as the Croatian team. They had some easy shots from the low post. The main difference between the two teams was this - they had 40 points in the paint, and we had just 20. It was really hard for us to play against such tall players. I am very pleased with our game. The Croatian team was very well ballanced, and very experienced. I think it was good game for both teams. We had good moments on offence."

Radostina Dimitrova, Bulgaria
"I think we had good a game. A loss by four points is not too much and I hope in our away game to make it better. We had our chances. Croatia has a good team, very tall players. I hope we will continue playing as a good team and will improve."
