Ruthless Russia Secure Qualification

5. Evgenia Belyakova (Russia)

Russia booked their place at EuroBasket Women 2015 as they took the top spot in Group E of the 2nd Qualification Round from Sweden with an assured 69-44 victory over Netherlands in Moscow on Wednesday.

Russia made their intentions clear early on, jumping out to a 22-3 lead at the end of the first period, which all but settled the game as a contest.

Evgenia Belyakova's hot hand was a feature early on as she poured in seven points in the first period on her way to 11 in total.

Netherlands restored some pride, and even threatened to come back into the game, when they outscored their hosts 20-12 in the third quarter.

But Russia responded, stepping up their defence, and going on a 14-2 tear to put the result beyond doubt.

The hosts finished the game with three players in double figures for scoring while Tanya Bröring led Netherlands with nine.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Russia vs. Netherlands

Meindert van Veen, Netherlands Head Coach
"It was very disappointing start, we missed all our shots. After the break we improved a little bit our game but it wasn't enough. I know that Russia is a strong team but I am really disappointed with our stat lines and the final score. We would have liked to lose by a smaller margin. Now I can only congratulate Russia for making it to EuroBasket Women 2015."

Tanya Bröring, Netherlands
"I think we can agree that the Russian players are smarter than us. I guess if we worked harder together during the game, we'd be able to go down by a lesser margin. I also want to wish good luck to the Russian team for next year."

Anatoliy Myshkin, Russia Head Coach
"Our opponents weren't a poor team in Qualification. I could also say that they are stronger than some of the teams that are already in the EuroBasket. For taking part in the finals the teams should really fight and being 100% prepared. I'm very happy that such players as Belyakova, Osipova, Petrakova agreed to be a part of our team. I'm absolutely satisfied with my team."

Eugenia Belyakova, Russia
"These game were a kind of lesson not just for our young girls, but also for the veterans. From game to game we felt ourselves better and more united as the team. The veterans understand that they always have somebody behind them who can help or do even better."
