GAME REPORT

Barthold Bumps Up Swedish Chances

12. Anna Barthold (Sweden)
Veteran Anna Barthold led all scorers with 17 points

A superb contribution from veteran forward Anna Barthold carried Sweden to a 73-51 road success against the Netherlands to wrap up their EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round campaign.

While Lars Johansson and his team must now wait for other results elsewhere to determine their chances of making it to the Final Round, Sweden certainly boosted their prospects of progressing with this third consecutive victory.

Barthold finished with a terrific 17 points from eight-of-ten floor shooting, as Sweden capitalised on a second quarter lockdown of the Dutch offence and a strong finish to complete the job.

Already leading by seven points after the first quarter, Sweden stepped up their defensive effort ahead of half-time and held the home side to a measly four points during the second period.

That gave the Netherlands much to do after the break and especially when Frida Eldebrink started the half with a three-pointer to extend the superiority of the visitors to 38-17.

Although the home side trimmed the deficit by more than half and trailed by ten points heading into the last ten minutes, Sweden erupted with 30 more points to coast to victory.

While Frida Eldebrink and Louice Halvarsson didn't enjoy the best shooting nights, the former had seven assists and Halvarsson had 12 points and as many rebounds.

Tanya Broring and Chatilla van Grinsven shared 24 points in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Netherlands vs. Sweden

Meindert van Veen, Netherlands Head Coach
"Before half-time we didn't play well enough. After the break we fought ourselves back into the game. But it remained difficult to compete with a team with American and pro players. Having said that, the main difference today was Sweden making their shots and us missing them too often."

Kourtney Treffers, Netherlands
"We didn't play well today. In the first half we played some good offence, but our finishing was poor. In the second half we played more aggressively, with more enthusiasm. That's what our game should be about."

Lars Johansson, Sweden Head Coach
"Before this game we were a little bit afraid because this was the last chance for the Netherlands to qualify. Our objective was to play very concentrated from start to finish and to create a spread as big as possible. We hope it is enough to qualify as one of the best second placed teams."

Ashley Key, Sweden
"Compared to the game in Sweden this was a tough game. We expected they would play tougher on their home court."
