GAME REPORT

Sweden Extract A Slice Of Revenge

14. Louice Halvarsson (Sweden)
Louice Halvarsson had a great game for Sweden against Russia

Having lost their opening game of their EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round campaign in Russia, there was a slice of revenge for Sweden who completed a 57-52 victory against their Group E rivals.

Louice Halvarsson came up trumps with an MVP performance for the jubilant hosts who locked Russia down in the last quarter to seal the deal.

The center accumulated a terrific haul of 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the way as both teams struggled desperately to find their perimeter game.

But with Halvarsson on top form, Sweden prevailed, despite having watched a double-digit lead early in the game evaporate completely.

After a tight first 15 minutes, Sweden made their move and opened up serious daylight when Kalis Loyd made it 30-20.

But either side of half-time, Russia composed themselves and outscored the home team by 16-3 to gain the upper-hand.

However it boiled down to the last period and Sweden did a great job defensively to hold Russia to just five points in over nine minutes, which combined with the play of Halvarsson, was sufficient to cross the finishing line first.

Ashley Key played a nice cameo for Sweden with 13 points, while Nadezhda Grishaeva had an eye-catching 23 points and nine rebounds for Russia, with veteran Irina Osipova completing a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Sweden vs. Russia

Anatoliy Myshkin, Russia Head Coach
"We made 22 turnovers, it's very difficult to win then. Some of our leading players didn't seem to be quite ready for the game. But Sweden away is a very tough game and we achieved our minimum goal, if we were to lose we didn't want to lose with more than 13 points. We will do our best to beat the Netherlands in Moscow and go to Eurobasket 2015. Congratulations to Sweden for a good win, I hope they go to EuroBasket too so we can compete again."

Lars Johansson, Sweden Head Coach
"I'm very happy with the win. Our first goal was to win the game and I never really felt that we had an opportunity to win the game with 15 points or more. Russia is such a good team, it's not easy to beat them at all. Defensively I think we were almost flawless, we played very well. Now we have to continue to be humble and try our best to beat the Netherlands in the last game."

Nadezhda Grishaeva, Russia
"Sweden is a tough team, they played physical and very well. We wanted to win obviously, but we can still go to EuroBasket as group winners if we beat the Netherlands at home. That's what we aim to do."

Kalis Loyd, Sweden
"We played together as a team, we had fun out there and supported each other all the way. We pushed the tempo and played physical defence and the Russian team got uncomfortable. A good win for us, now we're going to try our best to beat the Netherlands as well."
