GAME REPORT

Ukraine Punch Final Round Ticket

There were celebrations in Cetinje but it wasn't from the locals after Ukraine beat Montenegro 75-71 in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round to punch their ticket for next year's Final Round.

In a duel between the two unbeaten teams in Group D, it was Ukraine who stretched their perfect campaign to five games after recovering from watching a 15-point second half lead wiped out with just 20 seconds remaining.

It had been Montenegro who jumped into an early 12-4 lead after Jelena Dubljevic showed her class by completing an ‘and-1' play, but it wasn't long until Ukraine got themselves back on an equal footing.

Then, with both teams struggling to impose themselves, Ukraine eventually finished the half with a flourish and seven straight points to take a 35-29 lead to the locker rooms.

They were helped by a perfect shooting display from Oleksandra Kurasova, who eventually corralled a superb 18 points after making seven-of-nine from the field.

It was still a one-shot game midway through the penultimate quarter, but Ukraine then initiated what had looked to be a 20-8 game-winning burst across the third and fourth quarter break.

Nine successive points during that burst of scoring culminated in Ganna Zarytska hitting a three-pointer which gave Ukraine a 62-47 advantage.

However, Montenegro produced a superb late rally and outscoring their opponents 23-9, managed to level the game at 71-71 after a triple from Jelena Skerovic and jump-shot from Snezana Aleksic.

But, Ukraine made the free throws they needed in the dying seconds to squeeze out a memorable success.

Alina Iagupova was outstanding for the winning team with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Dubljevic finished with 25 points for Montenegro before fouling out with 90 seconds remaining.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Ukraine vs. Montenegro

Vadim Czeczuro, Ukraine Head Coach
"Montenegro is a very experienced and good team and we knew it. It's not easy to play all six matches away and that's why this victory is very important because we managed a difficult away game against a great opponent. We also had a 15-point lead, but Montenegro took advantage of our decline in concentration and we went into a dramatic finish. The winner was not known until the very end and that's why I have to congratulate my players, because they were great."

Oleksandra Kurasova, Ukraine
"It is good that we had a 15-point advantage, because there has been a decline in our game. We have achieved the goal and won the first match against Montenegro. We will do all to prepare in the best way for the next match and we want to be first in the group."

Momir Milatovic, Montenegro Head Coach
"We dropped the game in the third quarter and Ukraine reached a double-digit advantage which eventually was crucial. I believe that we have learned our lessons and will play better and achieve victory [in the next game]."

Jelena Dubljevic, Montenegro
"A very tough match, both physically and mentally, a game that carried a big stake, and that could decide everything. We've extended the uncertainty and postponed a decision on the winner of the group for Wednesday. We showed character in the last quarter and we did not resigned till the end. I believe that on Wednesday we will celebrate first place in the group with our fans."
