GAME REPORT

Montenegro Get Past Gutsy Finland

Montenegro are yet to taste defeat in Group D of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round after completing a far from comfortable 75-72 victory against Finland.

Having been coasting for long periods, Montenegro had to withstand a late onslaught from the Finns, which briefly threw the outcome into question before time expired.

It was a far cry from the start, when Momir Milatovic had watched on intently as his players did the bulk of the damage during the first phase of the game with a whirlwind opening eleven minutes.

That had witnessed Montenegro charging into a 29-17 advantage after Ana Baletic firstly scored inside the arc and then from the perimeter on the next possession.

Finland did find their feet and did some much improved work approaching half-time, as they trimmed the deficit by almost half to 38-31 - helped greatly by a three-ball from Dionne Pounds who finished with a stellar 25 points.

When Taru Tuukkanen dropped a triple early in the third quarter, followed by another from Pounds, the lead of Montenegro had been cut to just 42-37.

But, once the home team had scored 11 of the next 13 points, they were back on the front foot and looked like sailing into the distance.

However, Finland set up a tricky last quarter as they came roaring back with an eye-popping 28 points in the last ten minutes and a 13-2 finish to the contest which left Montenegro rattled.

Iva Perovanovic had 17 points and seven rebounds for Montenegro.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Montenegro vs. Finland

Momir Milatovic, Montenegro Head Coach
"We expected a tough match because after two wins against Germany we felt tired. In this game we were preparing for the matches against Ukraine because a win against Finland was expected. Finland took advantage of our relaxation, stole a couple of balls and eventually reduced the deficit to just three points."

Ana Baletic, Montenegro
"We were tired after the matches against Germany. There has been a relaxation in the finish of the game and a quality team like Finland knew to penalise that. Finland is a team that has a good shot and is extremely physically ready."

Anton Mirolybov, Finland Head Coach
"I congratulate Montenegro on this victory; they played aggressively and deserved the victory. I'm proud of my team because we fought to the end of the match and it is very important for our young team. I expect a tough match against Montenegro in Helsinki and I believe we will be even better."

Heta Korpivaara, Finland
"I am proud of my teammates and how we came back because we had a 20-point deficit, but we managed to come back. We are not satisfied because we have not won, but we have to be satisfied with what the energy we have shown and look forward to the next match against Montenegro in Helsinki."
