GAME REPORT

Dotto Seals Italian Revenge Mission

4. Francesca Dotto (Italy)
Francesca Dotto poured in 20 points for Italy

Young gun Francesca Dotta propelled Italy to a 65-52 win against Portugal in Group C of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round as the Azzurre avenged a defeat earlier in the campaign.

The victory for Roberto Ricchini and his team was built around a powerful 25-5 run across the third and fourth quarter break which ripped the momentum out of Portuguese hands.

Having led 34-25 in the third quarter and having led for long periods of the contest, it had looked like the visitors were on course for an unlikely double.

But, with the irrepressible talent of Dotto to call upon, Italy were able to dig themselves out of a potential hole.

From those arrears of nine points which had made the scenario look decidedly gloomy, Italy found a new gear as Dotto firstly levelled the scores at 34-34 as the hosts racked up 11 points without reply.

That put them ahead and while Carla Nascimento started the final quarter with a three-pointer to put Portugal back ahead by a point, it was the last time they would have their noses in front.

Italy seized the initiative and continued their good work from the third quarter with a breathtaking 17-2 burst which took the game out of the reach of Portugal.

Dotto had a magnificent 20 points, three assists and three steals and was supported by Chiara Consolini who added a wonderful cameo of 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Sofia Da Silva had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds for Portugal.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Italy vs. Portugal

Roberto Ricchini, Italy Head Coach
"I congratulate our opponents, because Portugal played a great game; for both teams this was a decisive match. We did not start very well, then in the second half we turned up the intensity on defence and offence and so we won. Now we have to think about the game against Latvia."

Francesca Dotto, Italy
"Beyond my personal performance, I am very happy for this win. Today was a crucial match that we won thanks to a great second half. Portugal started better than us, then we were able to react. We are a team that never gives up, this is our strength. The next game against Latvia will be very important."

Ricardo Vasconcelos, Portugal Head Coach
"Congratulations to Italy, this is a very important win for them. Francesca Dotto was able to play one-on-one many times, this changed the game. We are a young team and inexperienced, but I am proud of my players: they played a great qualification round."

Sofia Da Silva, Portugal
"We played a great first half on defence and on offence. In the second part of the game we suffered from Italy's reaction. We are a young team and we succumbed to the bigger experience of Italy in the final part of game. We will try to win our last game against Estonia."
