Belgium Finish Strong On The Road

5. Julie Vanloo (Belgium)
Julie Vanloo and Belgium managed to beat F.Y.R. of Macedonia

Belgium breezed past F.Y.R. of Macedonia 95-58 in Kavadarci on Wednesday to complete their unsuccessful EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round with back-to-back wins.

The Belgian side followed up the weekend's impressive win over Lithuania with another encouraging performance to lock up third place in Group B and condemn F.Y.R. of Macedonia to a sixth straight defeat.

Belgium looked the stronger side from the opening tip but their hosts managed to stick with them in the first period.

That is until Julie Vanloo's fastbreak three-pointer jolted Belgium into a 9-0 run which would turn into a 31-10 quarter.

From that point on F.Y.R. of Macedonia were playing for pride and they certainly restored some in the third period, matching Belgium 20-20, as Krisi Givens poured in 12 of her incredible 38 points.

But the Belgians steadied themselves and negotiated the final quarter with a minimum of fuss, Vanloo leading from the front with 16 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: F.Y.R. of Macedonia vs. Belgium

Daniel Goethals, Belgium Head Coach
"It is never easy to play against underdog teams, especially when they play on home court, but we played great during the whole match and I am proud of my team. This team is still young and still has a lot of improvement coming in the next years, and I am happy that the girls, no matter the result, wanted to compete, and to show the best level of basketball in every minute they played in the qualifications. We wanted to qualify of course, and we were competing with great teams in our group. I am sure that we learned much that can be used to secure even bigger improvement of our women's basketball in the future."

Sofie Hendrickx, Belgium
"It was important for us after the match against Lithuania to finish the campaign with a win, and with a good feeling. Even though we didn't qualify, we played very good as a team, and we showed character that is important to our country. We were very close, but the most important thing is that we learned from these matches, and we improved through these qualifications."

Goran Jovanovic, F.Y.R. of Macedonia Head Coach
"I really can't explain what happened from the last match in Great Britain, till now. These were two totally different matches, and we all know that in this one against Belgium, we maybe played the worst till now. If I can give a general opinion about the qualifications, we cannot be happy with the result, but the team is still very young, and learning from one game to another. We have to continue to fight, to play with heart in every match, and to learn from each new moment on the court. With a proper work in the future I hope that these girls will be able to compete well against the best countries in Europe."

Krisi Givens, F.Y.R. of Macedonia
"I am not satisfied at all; especially after the good match we played against Great Britain in the previous round. We are a very young team, which needs a lot of work in the future to be able to compete with the best European teams. It is important that we all learn from these matches, to get better results in the years to come."
