GAME REPORT

Lithuania Make Statement Of Intent

13. Gintare Petronyte (Lithuania)
Gintare Petronyte led Lithuania's offensive against FYR of Macedonia
Lithuania showed why they could be the team to beat in EuroBasket Women 2nd Qualification Round Group B after making a real statement of intent with a 108-66 win against FYR of Macedonia.

Gintare Petronyte was the standout performer for the winning side, managing to achieve a near flawless shooting performance with just one missed free-throw spoiling a perfect performance as she grabbed 20 points in less than 14 minutes of game time.

The visitors were caught in an offensive barrage during a one-sided third quarter, which saw the home side explode for a staggering 38 points in the period to continue the high-scoring theme witnessed during their preparations.

Opting to keep faith with Krisi Givens as their naturalised option, FYR of Macedonia relied on her for a mammoth double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds, but the lack of support meant the away team were off the pace.

Up by twelve points when coming out of the locker room at the break, Lithuania hit top gear offensively and it blew their opponents out of the water.

In fact, the home side amassed 66 points in the second-half as the FYR of Macedonia defence buckled, having managed to post a respectable first twenty minutes.

Kamile Nacickaite continued her rich vein of form with 17 points to help hand head coach Mantas Sernius a win on his competitive debut in the box-seat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Lithuania vs. F.Y.R. of Macedonia

Mantas Sernius, Lithuania Head Coach
"We struggled in the beginning because in the preparation we did not play against a team that played a similar style like to their team. It took us some time to figure out how to play and how to defend. But after that we were basically in control. With all respect to their team I expect that we need to show better basketball against our next opponent. Overall I am happy how our players executed the game plan. The only thing we should and could improve is the self confidence of some of our players."

Gintare Petronyte, Lithuania
"They surprised us with their defensive plays in the beginning - we just did not know how to play against it for a while. But after the break we changed some things and finished with a good win."

Goran Jovanovic, F.Y.R. of Macedonia Head Coach
"The game was very tough, especially since the Lithuanian team is one of the best in Europe. The loss wasn't as bad as it seemed because my players gained valuable experience playing against a very strong team. Our squad is very young and some players are 16 or 17 years old. Rebounds were one of the main weaknesses for us in this game. Rebounding must improve if we want to perform better in our next games."

Krisi Givens, F.Y.R. of Macedonia
"The game versus Lithuania was exciting and I am happy to play in Kedainiai. Even though I had a great game, it wasn't so important because to me the most important thing is that my team wins. This game was great for my younger team-mates who need this kind of experience against top level teams like Lithuania."
