GAME REPORT

Kobryn Class Takes Poland To OT Triumph

Ewelina Kobryn (Poland)
Ewelina Kobryn shined bright for Poland with a 24-point, nine-rebound performance

Ewelina Kobryn underlined why her return to national team action was so widely celebrated after a class effort took Poland to a 75-70 overtime success against Slovakia in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The center finished an entertaining affair just one rebound short of a double-double, after amassing 24 points from an eye-catching eight-of-eleven floor-shooting display.

This third straight Group A win for Poland was made all the more impressive by the fact that they had lost Martyna Koc to a broken nose and Magdalena Skorek to a knee injury.

Poland also had to contend with the arrival of Kristi Toliver, with the naturalised American making a belated debut for Slovakia, although the guard couldn't prevent her adopted nation from slipping to a first loss after making the play which forced the extra five minutes.

The hosts had generally been on top for much of the first half, extending their 19-14 lead considerably after a subsequent 14-2 run.

At that point, Slovakia were in serious danger of being potentially blown away, but they recovered impressively and hauled themselves back to a one-shot game at 47-45 after a triple from Lucia Krc-Turbova.

While Poland pushed their lead back out again to as many as eight points, Slovakia continued refusing to lie down and Toliver forced overtime.

She also sunk a three-ball to start the extra period and that put Slovakia on the front foot, but Kobryn got Poland rolling once more and they eventually won from the free-throw line.

Toliver top scored for the losing team with 17 points and teenage ace Zsofia Hruscakova claimed a fine 16 points and 10 rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Poland vs. Slovakia

Maros Kovacik, Slovakia Head Coach
"We saw a very good game. In the first half for sure Poland was better. In the second one we found a way to beat their aggressive defence, especially behind the arc. Two players, [Justyna] Zurowska and [Ewelina] Kobryn, scored a lot of points. It's very difficult sometimes to guard them. I'm very proud of my players. We played a good game against a very good team. Maybe the experience decided, especially at the end of the game."

Anna Jurcenkova, Slovakia
"We had a very bad start of the game. It was very hard to get back, but we did it. We couldn't find a way to score more points in overtime."

Jacek Winnicki, Poland Head Coach
"I think it was a very good basketball game. Both teams were prepared. We knew that Kristi Toliver and Zuzana Zirkova were the key players. Our players on positions 4 and 5 were playing consequently and scored more than 40 points. We are very happy, we have three victories. We have to be calm now and win in Luxembourg on Wednesday."

Ewelina Kobryn, Poland
"I'm very pleased with this result. We didn't expect the overtime, but we continued our play. The team is well prepared for this qualification campaign."
