GAME REPORT

Poland Stroll Past Luxembourg In Opener

22. Martyna Koc (Poland)
Poland were too strong in the end for Luxembourg
There was no surprise in EuroBasket Women 2nd Qualification Round Group A after Poland strolled to a comfortable 66-33 success against underdogs Luxembourg.

Jacek Winnicki and his team made light work of safely despatching their opponents, since even if Luxembourg did score two of the first three baskets in the contest, it was most certainly not a sign of things to come.

Although to their credit, for much of the opening half the visitors proved a handful at times and played enough defence to ensure Poland couldn't streak away.

It was rising star and the highly rated 16-year-old Lisa Jablonowski who scored for Luxembourg to keep the hosts within their sights at 24-17.

But, from that point onwards, it was very much one-way traffic as the home team put their foot on the accelerator.

A 15-3 run either side of the interval had Poland engaged on cruise control and they were able to see out the remainder of the game by shutting Luxembourg down defensively.

Magdalena Skorek had an efficient 14 points for Poland who still have UMMC Ekaterinburg star Ewelina Kobryn to come into their line-up.

Jablonowski had nine points and five rebounds for Luxembourg.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Poland vs. Luxembourg

Hermann Paar, Luxembourg Head Coach
"Congratulations to Poland. We expected this type of game. Poland is better than Luxembourg in a physical way and in experience. Players from Poland play at this level and that's the difference. In the end, Poland won, which was expected."

Cathy Schmit, Luxembourg
"
It is a deserved win for Poland. In the first half we were still in the game. Our defence was okay. In the second half they made their shots. We have to correct our mistakes, learn from this game and improve in the next games."

Jacek Winnicki, Poland Head Coach
"We had to win this game. Our goal is to qualify for EuroBasket. We used all our players today. We had some good moments, and some bad moments. We're satisfied with our defence, which was good. We only had 33 points against us."

Paulina Pawlak, Poland
"I'm very happy that we started the 2nd Qualification Round with a win. We played 40 minutes against zone defence. We were shooting from distance a lot. In the second half we were winning by 20 points and controlled the whole game. They scored only 33 points, which means we played solid defence."
