GAME REPORT

Latvia Add To Italian Woes In Group C

7. Elina Babkina (Latvia)
Elina Babkina was one of four Latvian players to score in double figures

Italy slipped to successive losses in Group C of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round after suffering a 70-59 defeat in Latvia who have now won all three of their games.

Having slipped up in Portugal, head coach Roberto Ricchini had identified Riga as the perfect place to get back on a winning track, but it wasn't to be after a disastrous third quarter put them on the losing path once more.

There had been absolutely nothing between both nations in a competitive first half which saw the visitors snatch a narrow one-point lead at 28-27 after a basket by veteran Raffaella Masciadri.

But, it was a much different story when Italy re-appeared as Latvia turned on the turbo boosters and produced a scintillating 22-7 third quarter which handed them the perfect platform to ease to another win.

Italy could only manage two points in over five minutes and that allowed Latvia to move ahead, although when Masciadri scored from long distance, it was still only 35-33 to the home team.

It was the end of the third period which proved catastrophic for Italy, as Latvia shifted up through the gears with a fantastic 14-2 run which culminated in a triple from Liene Priede.

As hard as Italy tried to recover the situation, the damage was too severe at 49-35 and they couldn't get themselves back within touching distance which seriously threatened the outcome.

Giorgia Sottana had 17 points for Italy and five assists, but they were severely beaten on the boards.

Latvia had Zenta Melnika pull down 10 rebounds and teenage guard Kate Kreslina continued to enhance her reputation with 13 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Latvia vs. Italy

Roberto Ricchini, Italy Head Coach
"We knew that it would be a tough game. Latvia played hard for 40 minutes and did not stop until the end. We played the kind of basketball we wanted to play. We need to continue like this in order to improve. After two losses our situation is difficult but we will not give up. Now we need to win in Estonia."

Giorgia Sottana, Italy
"I think we played a good game against a good team. We lost the battle of rebounds, otherwise we did our best."

Ainars Zvirgsdins, Latvia Head Coach
"Congratulations to my girls. Their spirit and unselfishness helped us to win. Nothing is over yet. All our opponents need wins to have a chance to qualify. They are like predators and their quest is not over. Our defence is good, we need to improve our offence."

Baiba Eglite, Latvia
"It was important to finish the first round with a win against Italy. We must follow this pattern in the next game. After the half-time break we came out less nervous, more focused. We expected s tough defence from Italy."
