GAME REPORT

Germany Bounce Back, Keep Hopes Alive

5. Anne Breitreiner (Germany)
Anne Breitreiner led all scorers with 21 points

Super performances from Katharina Fikiel and Anne Breitreiner took Germany to a 66-59 win against Portugal in Group D as they breathed life into their EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualification Round campaign.

Having slumped to defeat against Israel, Alexandra Maerz and her players responded in style against Portugal, as Fikiel plundered a sparkling double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds.

And, with Breitreiner finding her range from downtown with four triples en-route to 21 points, Germany were always in control, even if they did ease off the gas in the final quarter.

Portugal had lost their first game against F.Y.R of Macedonia in gut-wrenching fashion and perhaps they were suffering a hangover from that disappointment as they struggled to get going in the first half.

It handed Germany the initiative and they moved 22-16 ahead, although Portugal finally came alive to make it a one-shot game at 28-25 after a basket by Carla Nascimento.

But, when Breitreiner drained a score from behind the three-point line, it got Germany back on a roll and they never looked back - especially when they sunk 11 points without reply either side of half-time, to move 47-36 ahead.

Portugal tried to respond, but even an 18-10 final period in their favour wasn't enough to prevent them slipping to a second loss in as many days.

Maria Correia had 16 points and five steals in defeat, whilst team-mate Sofia Da Silva had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Germany vs. Portugal

Germany Head Coach Alexandra Maerz:
"I am very happy with the character that the players showed today after the big disappointment of yesterday. We will fight until the last minute of this tournament; we are a young team and we want to win every game."

Germany player Svenja Brunckhorst:
"We played much better today and it's very important for us to stay alive in this tournament, at least until the next game. We played freely today free and we showed our strength."

Portugal Head Coach Ricardo Vasconcelos:
"Well we lost two games, but today it was a completely different game than yesterday; we played against a great German team and if we were playing as we did against the F.Y.R. of Macedonia the gap would have been even bigger, so we did a better job today. However we need to keep learning and we hope to win our last game against Israel."

Portugal player Carla Freitas:
"We are a very young team, and I tried to do my best. I am one of the older players so therefore I tried to give some spirit to the rest of the players but still we have to learn. But it is not so bad for us; we are learning and growing as a team."
