Belgians Deny Hosts Solitary Win

8. Sofie Hendrickx (Belgium)

Belgium have come from behind to defeat EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualifying Round Group C hosts Finland 59-56 to finish their tournament on a positive note.

The win came on the back of a flawless third quarter defensive effort when the Belgians contained their hosts to four points, allowing them to turn an eight-point deficit at the half into a six-point lead going into the final frame.

On a Vreny Van Driel three-pointer with 4:04 to play, Belgium appeared to have the game in the bank with their lead extended to 10 points (53-43).

However, spurred on by a partisan crowd, Finland fought to the death, tying the game up at 56 on a Linda Lehtoranta jump-shot with 47 seconds remaining.

But Belgium retained their composure, with Noemie Mayombo sinking a pair of free-throws before veteran Nele Deyaert split a pair to give the guests a three-point buffer.

Another veteran, Reetta Piipari, had a chance to send the game into overtime but her three-point attempt was off-target.

Sofie Hendrickx topped Belgium's scoring as the only player to make double figures, grabbing 12 alongside 14 rebounds.

Taru Tuukkanen and Heta Korpivaara both finished with 14 for Finland.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Finland vs. Belgium

Belgium head coach Daniel Goethals

"This is a new start for these young players. It's important we can play quality games against teams such as Finland and Poland. I knew that the game wasn't over when we were leading by 10 points with four minutes to go, but managed to keep the lead until the end. I am happy with our effort."

Belgium player Noemie Mayombo

"After a bad first quarter we had a great start to the second quarter. We didn't let them score inside and they couldn't get shots off from the outside. We put Finland in trouble with our pressure defence and took the rebounds. We have been together for five weeks now and we wanted to win this game really bad, so we're very glad for this."

Finland head coach Anton Mirolybov

"Yesterday we played a tough, intensive game - 40 minutes of very hard basketball. Our defeat against Poland was mentally very tough and I am happy that we were able to fight today as well. It seemed to me we ran out of legs and energy; when we ran out of legs and energy, we ran out of thought and couldn't get anything going like we wanted. Belgium did a great job keeping us away from the paint."

Finland player Heta Korpivaara

"We played pretty good basketball in the first half but our third quarter was probably one of our worst ever. We were probably a little bit fatigued and weren't focused enough. I'm proud that we could still tie the game and play for the win but they had the upper edge at the end."
