GAME REPORT

Slovenia Survive Scare Against Swiss

Group B of the EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualification Round is on a knife-edge heading into the final day, after Slovenia shrugged off a late scare against Switzerland to take an 84-76 win.

The result sets up the intriguing prospect of a potential three-way tie, with Switzerland needing to respond with a victory against fellow contenders Bulgaria tomorrow.

Switzerland may feel disappointed that after a bright opening when they got their noses in front, they fell apart during the middle part of the contest.

The game got away from them as they gave themselves far too much to do by falling 54-36 behind early in the third quarter.

They struggled to cope defensively with Slovenia, who finished with no fewer than five players in double digits as they shot the lights out from distance, converting 10 of their 15 triple attempts.

However, at least the Swiss can take heart from the way they reacted to their predicament, as they gave their opponent a real fright.

Having looked down and out, they hauled themselves back into things and led by Karen Twehues, who top-scored with 21 points, they clawed their way back to within two points at 62-60.

But, Slovenia had enough to get themselves over the finishing line, as they made the free throws they needed to make the win safe.

Tina Trebec led the way with a majestic 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Sandra Pirsic added a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Slovenia vs. Switzerland

Slovenia Head Coach Tomo Oresnik:
"We knew that it will be a tough game. We were under pressure because this is our chance to go to the semi-finals. On the other side - they were freed; they played their first game here. They just tried to win. We controlled the game till the middle of the third quarter. Then they hit a few shots from the three-point line and the result was tied. We stayed calm and we managed to win. We had some problems with the free throws, and made too many mistakes, that's why the difference is not bigger."

Slovenia player Tina Trebec:
"We are happy with this win, but we are still disappointed with yesterday's loss. Today we didn't show our best again."

Switzerland Assistant Coach Romain Gaspoz:
"We started the game knowing that it will be very physical game. They are very strong inside the paint. We are very proud with the third quarter. We tried to manage this as best as possible; we did a good job. We missed some details in the end, especially in the rebounds. Now we are thinking about the next game - against Bulgaria."

Switzerland player Karen Twehues:
"It was a good game. We played intensely from the beginning. We played good defense, but they made some good shots. We tried to fight although we obviously had a disadvantage in height. We did our best, we fought till the end."
