GAME REPORT

Estonia Confirm They Are The Real Deal

5. Viive-Kai Rebane (Estonia)
Viive-Kai Rebane contributed a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, as Estonia recorded their second victory in Group A

Estonia showed they are genuine contenders to finish top of Group A in the EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualification Round after blasting their way to a 77-54 success against a shell-shocked Netherlands, whose dreams are now over.

Having romped to a 79-53 victory against Luxembourg on the opening day, the Estonians powered their way past a Dutch side who slumped to their second defeat, off the back of their loss to Greece.

And, the Greeks could potentially now be left with a winner-takes-all showdown with Estonia to see who make it to the semi-finals.

Trailing 34-30 at the halfway point of the contest, Estonia turned the game on its head with a devastating 21-6 third quarter, which was an absolute nightmare for the Netherlands.

As Dutch head coach Meindert van Veen looked on in despair as his players imploded, his counterpart Jaanus Levkoi will have revelled in watching his team pile on the agony.

The Estonian defence smothered the Netherlands who could only score one basket in over seven minutes after re-emerging from the locker-room at the break.

That had Estonia on the front foot as they posted a 17-2 run to earn a cushion which they actually didn't need, since they continued their dominance during the final period.

Merike Anderson had 22 points and six steals for the winning side, whilst Chatilla Van Grinsven had 15 points on a day to forget for the Netherlands.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Netherlands vs. Estonia

Netherlands Head Coach Meindert Van Veen:
"We had a bad start in the game, but in the second quarter, thanks to our full-court press, we managed to come back. So we were able to lead by four at halftime. In the second half Estonia played a lot better. So they completely deserve their victory. Already now, after two games only, this tournament is a big disappointment for us."

Netherlands player Tanya Bröring:
"We wanted to continue to play the full-court press in the second half too because it brought us back in the game during the second quarter. The problem was that we didn't have the energy anymore after all these efforts before halftime. Estonia played a lot smarter in these moments. They had a lot of open shots they could make easily and so they deserved their victory completely. We have to play a lot tougher in the future."

Estonia Head Coach Jaanus Levkoi:
"The Dutch team created a lot of problems for us with their full-court press during the second quarter, so we had to adjust a few details during halftime. After that the girls did what they had to do on the court. We played a pretty offense in the second half and the Dutch team lost its confidence more and more. However the last game of the tournament will be very hard because Greece has a very tough team."

Estonia player Viive-Kai Rebane:
"We played a very good second half, after we found good solutions against their full-court press. On defence, we managed pretty well to keep their tall inside players away from the baskets. I think we deserved our victory today. We came to Luxembourg to win two games what we have done already right now. Who knows maybe we are able to also win the third, but the team from Greece is very strong."
