GAME REPORT

Israel Dig Out Valuable Maiden Success

8. Shay Doron (Israel)
Shay Doron led the charge for Israel with 20 points

There was a palpable sigh of relief in Ramat Gan as the home favourites Israel dug out a nail-biting 71-68 win against Bulgaria to take a first success in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The Group F victory also marked a first competitive win for recently appointed play-caller Adan Inbar, whose nerves must have been left completely shredded after this absorbing contest.

Both teams suffered close losses in their respective openers against Croatia and it was Bulgaria who had to swallow another bitter pill as they once again fell agonisingly short.

Israel had assumed control despite a sluggish start which had seen Bulgaria sprint into a 24-17 lead, only to be dragged back as the hosts produced a 19-7 run.

It had looked like Israel might enjoy a relatively comfortable victory when Michal Epstein scored a couple of free throws to make it 49-40 in the third quarter, but Donneka Hodges set up a brilliantly tense finale, when she put Bulgaria back on terms at 58-58.

While Israel scored the next six points, Bulgaria again showed resilience with another basket from Hodges and back-to-back triples from Radostina Dimitrova which gave the visitors a slender lead inside the last two minutes.

But, Bulgaria would only convert with one more jump shot from the 22-point Dimitrova and that left the door open for Israel to do the work from the free-throw line to scrape out a victory.

Milena Tomova added 17 points and nine rebounds for Bulgaria, while Shay Doron starred for Israel with 20 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Israel vs. Bulgaria

Adan Inbar, Israel Head Coach
"We should have closed out the game in the third quarter; when you don't do that in these games, the opponents come back. Our first quarter was terrible, at the end of the third we missed a lot of chances, but I'm glad we got the win. That's the only positive I see in our performance tonight."

Naama Sharif, Israel
"I'm glad I was able to contribute tonight, we had to win and protect our court - this is a close group and any team can win any game. We have a very important game next week, every point counts in this tournament."

Georgi Boshkov, Bulgaria Head Coach
"It was a very tough game, close throughout, with 1:58 to go we led by two and we lost a rebound on defence. That was a critical play; sometimes one rebound makes the difference between winning and losing. We played well most of the time; we had a few misunderstandings on defence that cost us the win. This group has the closest scores in the tournament, we have two more games and no one knows what will happen."

Milena Tomova, Bulgaria
"It was a very important game for us, it was a fight for both teams, we fought hard but at the end they fought harder than us."
