GAME REPORT

Brilliant Bär A Tonic For Germany

Romy Bär (Germany)
Romy Bär led the charge for Germany with a stellar all-round display

After four straight defeats, Germany belatedly got off the mark in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round by clinching an 84-79 success over fellow Group D strugglers Finland thanks to some brilliance from Romy Bär.

Continuing her red-hot form, Bär was magnificent with 19 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, four steals and four blocked shots.

Each without a win to their names ahead of tip-off, there was eventually some joy for the home team even if they had to recover after allowing a commanding early lead to disintegrate.

Starting off at a brisk tempo, Germany surged into a 27-12 lead after a nice ‘and-1' play from Lisa Koop inside seven minutes and threatened to blow the visitors away.

Just when they needed it most, Finland gained themselves a lifeline and foothold in the game by stemming the bleeding and putting together a much improved passage of play.

In fact, they threatened to turn the game on its head with a scintillating 29-11 burst, which saw 36-point Dionne Pounds give them the lead with a big shot from the perimeter.

After the shootout during the first half, both teams made the required defensive adjustments and that resulted in a predictably tighter third quarter, with only a score by Sonja Greinacher separating the teams.

Trailing by a point heading towards crunch time, a 12-2 run by Germany was enough to prevail, although it was a nervy finish.

Koop added 19 points for Germany with a super shooting performance.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Germany vs. Finland

Anton Mirolybov, Finland Head Coach
"Congratulations to Germany. It was a tough game. We played bad defence and after that it took a lot of energy to come back into the game. We were missing this energy in the final minutes. We will play everything out on Wednesday to win. Dionne [Pounds] is great. I am very happy for her."

Dionne Pounds, Finland
"My 36 points today don´t mean anything if you lose the game. Maybe I will be happy about it in some weeks or months. We let them score too many fast break points in the first half. Wednesday we have to be much better on defence to get a chance."

Alexandra Maerz, Germany Head Coach
"Relief is the right word for my feelings at the moment. I think we deserved the win today. It was a very tough game, even for the coaching staff. Now the final game can come, we will give everything."

Lisa Koop, Germany
"It was a team effort today, although I am happy about my performance. It was an important win for us. We will win in Finland on Wednesday."
