GAME REPORT

Malashenko Leads Ukraine Group D Charge

12. Olesia Malashenko (Ukraine)
Olesia Malashenko stood out for Ukraine with 21 points and six rebounds

Olesia Malashenko had a night to remember in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round as she produced her highest score in a senior national team vest to help Ukraine to an 81-72 win against Germany.

The forward, who until recently hadn't played for her country at this level since EuroBasket Women 2009, poured in 21 points to again remind everyone of the skills which illuminated a standout youth career in Ukraine colours.

Also adding six rebounds and three assists, it was the highlight of a third win for Ukraine who continue to fight it out to finish top of Group D having maintained their 100% start.

Germany however are still looking to register their first success and will be ruing not being able to capitalise on getting a glimpse of the finish line in the last quarter.

Having been behind for most of the contest having enjoyed an early share of the lead at 16-16, Alexandra Maerz and her players worked hard to hang tough and keep themselves in with a serious shout of clinching victory.

Trailing 50-37 in the third period after a nice ‘and-1' play from Valeriya Berezhynska, Germany responded by storming back and getting to within just four points via free throws from the outstanding Romy Bär, who shone brightly with 27 points.

But, Ukraine held firm helped by 17 points from Kateryna Dorogobuzova.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Germany vs. Ukraine

Vadim Czeczuro, Ukraine Head Coach
"We knew that these two games in Germany are very important. Today it was a good finish for us; we are up nine points now. But the next game will be very difficult. Our plus are the different scorers but our minus is that everybody wants to shoot the ball. Sometimes we are missing some discipline in that case."

Olesia Malashenko, Ukraine
"We are very happy to win here. It was a hard game, almost close, but we took our chances. It was real teamwork today; this was the main thing for our win."

Alexandra Maerz, Germany Head Coach
"We have to analyse what happened in the final minutes when we got a real chance to win. It took too long before we realised that we can win today. We have to win by at least ten points on Tuesday, this will be very hard. The crowd was great today, thanks a lot to Hagen. Probably Katharina Fikiel can play again on Tuesday."

Ireti Amojo, Germany
"I was a kind of energiser today. This is my role on this team. Our rebounding was not good enough today, this from my point of view was decisive. On Tuesday we will play our hearts out to win and to win by more than nine points. Everything is possible and we will do everything for it."
