GAME REPORT

Finland Finish With A Flourish

5. Taru Tuukkanen (Finland)
Taru Tuukkanen had a great game for Finland against Germany

Finland climbed off the bottom of Group D in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round, and above Germany, with a 63-51 win in Helsinki on Wednesday.

The Fins were winless heading into this final group game but established a healthy advantage following a 10-0 close to the first period, sparked by a three-pointer from Linda Lehtoranta.

Taru Tuukkanen jump shots either side of two Dionne Pounds free throws then stretched the lead to 35-23 at the half.

And when Germany failed to make the most of a promising start to the third period, Finland's confidence grew further and they increased their advantage to 44-27 following another Pounds triple.

Germany couldn't replicate Pounds' accuracy. They missed 11 consecutive three-point attempts as, unsuccessfully, began to chase the game.

Tuukkanen finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds in an impressive all-round display while Romy Bär and Sonja Greinacher each scored 10 points for Germany.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Finland vs. Germany

Alexandra Maerz, Germany Head Coach
"Both teams were in a difficult position because neither one us had managed to qualify for EuroBasket. It was hard to motivate our players. Finland was clearly more ready to play. We fought hard in the end, but it wasn't enough."

Svenja Brunckhorst, Germany
"We are disappointed, because we really wanted to win. Finland started really well; they were more ready to play and wanted to win more than we did."

Heta Korpivaara, Finland
"We played like we were supposed to play the whole summer. Had we defended this way all summer, we would have won more games."

Anton Mirolybov, Finland Head Coach
"Of course it's nice to end the summer with a win. We played aggressive defence the whole game. In the end, we got the win by the same way we got the lead: through teamwork."
