GAME REPORT

Third Time Lucky For Estonia

10. Merike Anderson (Estonia)
Veteran Merike Anderson scored a shared team-high 12 points for Estonia

There was unbridled joy in Tallinn as Group C of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round suddenly became crowded after Estonia took a confidence-boosting 67-60 home win against Portugal.

The triumph for the hosts means that all teams in the group now have a win to their name as Portugal experienced the other side of the coin by being squeezed out in a tight finish.

Having stunned Italy in their previous game in a dramatic conclusion, Portugal were bitten hard by a poor finish to the encounter, with the hosts impressively completing the job.

Down 60-59 with a little more than two minutes of action outstanding, Estonia grabbed their opportunity with both hands.

They shut down Portugal defensively, holding them scoreless for the remainder of the game and dropped eight points at the other end of the court to cement a memorable win.

Success had certainly looked questionable when Sofia Da Silva looked to have put Portugal in the perfect position to strike for consecutive narrow victories, but Laina Mesila-Kaarmann had other ideas.

She made two decisive scores in crunch time and with a basket by the experienced Merike Anderson and free throws by Viive-Kai Rebane in between those key baskets, Estonia prevailed in a game which had seen nothing but constant lead changes throughout.

Oksana Miil also stood out for Estonia with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Ines Faustino had 16 points in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Estonia vs. Portugal

Jaanus Levkoi, Estonia Head Coach
"We played better today overall compared to the first two games. Our one-on-one defence was working quite well and we also rebounded better. Our offence is getting sharper and we were able to create good shots and find right solutions on attack. The neext game against Italy we are going to face with positive thoughts."

Pirgit Puu, Estonia
"I think against Portugal we showed what we are capable of. We stuck to our game plan on offence and everyone showed an effort defensively. Today was our game and our day."

Ricardo Vasconcelos, Portugal Head Coach
"We didn't play well against Estonia. After we beat Italy last week we knew we had to win here to dream about qualification. We couldn´t score and our defence was not working how I wanted it to work. Our game starts from good defence so this was the biggest problem today."

Carla Nascimento, Portugal
"Estonia plays very physically and it was hard for us to adjust to that. It is difficult to play the same way against different teams and today we couldn´t show our best game. This is a very equal group."
