GAME REPORT

Latvia Take Baltic Derby Honours

7. Elina Babkina (Latvia)
Elina Babkina led all scorers with 18 points

Latvia emerged triumphant from their Baltic derby in Estonia after claiming a 74-56 Group C victory in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The visitors made the short hop to Tallinn and came away with their second victory of the campaign, having successfully seen off Portugal in their opener.

And much like their first outing it was the work on the glass which paved the way for victory, as head coach Ainars Zvirgzdins watched his team clean up on the boards.

Although Pirgit Puu put the hosts in front 10-8 after a confident start, Latvia grasped the initiative and began to slowly exert their influence on the meeting.

Either side of the break, the Latvian players were dominant and having opened up a double-digit advantage in the second quarter, then doubled their lead after the interval.

The impressive Anete Steinberga who finished with 14 points and seven boards, put her team 55-35 ahead at the end of the third period with a powerful drive to the hoop and that ended any realistic hopes Estonia had of winning.

The home side did spark a late rescue attempt and managed to cut the deficit to single figures in the fourth quarter, but Latvia pulled away again in the closing minutes.

Elina Babkina stood out with 18 points, five assists and four steals, while Puu had 17 points for the losing side.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Estonia vs. Latvia

Jaanus Levkoi, Estonia Head Coach
"Latvia played very aggressively and that caused us lots of problems today. We, on the other hand, had too many unforced turnovers and missed many easy shots under the basket. Latvia has more players with experience in high level leagues that we lack. But we keep our heads up and will try to beat Portugal on Sunday and then prepare for Italy again."

Merike Anderson, Estonia
"They were good on defence but our biggest problem is that we did not follow our own game plan. We can do that for 15 minutes but not all 40 and this way we can´t win games like this. We need more patience with the ball."

Ainars Zvirgsdins, Latvia Head Coach
"I´m happy with the win. We have a young team; only two players have experience on a high level like this. It´s the second victory for us and we will be ready for the next game in Italy. Compared to Estonia, we are taller and stronger under the basket and we tried to be more aggressive on defence. In the fourth quarter we lost our concentration a little, but still won."

Elina Babkina, Latvia
"We played bad in the last ten minutes but overall I think we were more ready for this game. We were up by ten points pretty much for the whole game, so we controlled it today. Happy to get the second win in the group."
