GAME REPORT

Frontcourt Carry Latvia Home

4. Zane Tamane (Latvia)
The returning Zane Tamane did the damage in the paint against Portugal
Aija Putnina and the returning Zane Tamane proved too hot to handle for Portugal as Latvia got off the ark at the first attempt in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round with a 71-61 Group C success.

The frontcourt duo combined for 35 points and 13 rebounds to put Portugal to the sword, with the latter back in a national team vest having announced her retirement early last year.

It was actually the visitors who enjoyed the better of the early part of the game, a three-point play from Daniela Domingues handing them a 25-20 advantage.

But, the middle two quarters were dominated by Latvia as they made their height and presence in the paint count.

They took control either side of the interval with a 14-0 run in the third quarter changing the momentum.

And,when Kate Kreslina converted from deep late in the period to make it 57-35, it looked like Portugal were done and dusted.

But, they posted a morale-boosting final quarter to perhaps even take the gloss off the victory for their opponents, who having been 22 points ahead, watched the arrears trimmed by more than half.

Domingues was the top pick for Portugal with 12 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Latvia vs. Portugal

Carla Nascimento, Portugal
"I think it was a good game for us. One thing we wanted was to stay in the game until the last minute. We didn't win but we played well."

Ricardo Vasconcelos, Portugal Head Coach
"We played good for 32 minutes. We knew the key is the inside game. It was hard to play with two post players only. We got into foul trouble early in the third quarter and it hit us hard. We like to play zone, however when we play zone we suffer under the basket. That's why we can't play the same defence all the time."

Aija Putnina, Latvia
"There were too many ups and downs throughout the game. A victory is a victory. We made a good run in the third quarter, however, paid the price for turnovers. Too many turnovers."

Ainars Zvirgzdins, Latvia Head Coach
"We are learning a lot. We have many players with their first national team experience, including an 18-year-old girl in the starting five. A lot of ups and downs, otherwise, it was a good starting point. Our fans helped us to win."
