GAME REPORT

Offensive Onslaught Gets Belgium Rolling

Antonia Delaere (Belgium)
Antonia Delaere was perfect from the field on her way to ten points

Belgium are off the mark and rolling in Group B of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round after finding their shooting touch to complete a comprehensive 94-66 success against F.Y.R. of Macedonia.

After losses to Great Britain and Lithuania in their opening two fixtures, a third defeat for head coach Daniel Goethals and his team had been unthinkable.

And, there was some initial unease after F.Y.R. of Macedonia kept pace during the opening quarter, Krisi Givens firstly bringing them level at 19-19, before Ivana Kmetovska converted a free throw just seconds later to give them a shock lead.

Only a three-pointer from Antonia Delaere put Belgium ahead going into the second period.

Unfortunately for Goran Jovanovic, his team once again suffered a ragged spell in the game defensively and the wheels came tumbling off as Belgium exploded and embarked on a primarily one-way offensive onslaught ahead of half-time.

Outscoring their opponents 27-9, it blasted a major hole in the early ambitions of F.Y.R. of Macedonia and left them scrambling to try and stop the rot.

It didn't happen as Belgium continued dropping shots from all over the court and especially from long range, something which allowed them to surge into a massive 72-37 advantage as the visiting defence fell apart.

While F.Y.R. of Macedonia regained their composure at both ends of the court during the last ten minutes, it was too late to even think about a realistic comeback attempt and they slipped to a third loss in as many games - despite 36 points from Givens and Andzelika Mitrasinovik.

Belgium meanwhile celebrated a first success with five players reaching double digits and Delaere completing a flawless shooting night with ten points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Belgium vs. F.Y.R. of Macedonia

Goran Jovanovic, F.Y.R. of Macedonia Head Coach
"The problem of our team is that we are too young. It's a very young team. The girls work very hard but it's yet too early to see an evolution. These games are made to make our team grow. We have time. The girls need time. Against our three opponents, we started very well our games. We have always a low after a few minutes and we have a lot of difficulties to follow the rhythm of our opponent. Against Lithuania also, our first half was pretty good. It was very difficult in the second period. We have quality in our group but we really need time to acquire more experience."

Andzelika Mitrasinovik, F.Y.R. of Macedonia
"We played good against Lithuania during the first half. We played a pretty nice second half against Great Britain. But we know very well that it will be very difficult to win away. Our opponents are very strong with a lot of experience. All of our mistakes meant points for Belgium. We knew that. The Belgian team is similar to Great Britain. We know also that we need time to learn. We are staying confident."

Daniel Goethals, Belgium Head Coach
"A victory is always important. For us it was needed. We needed to show respect to the other team. This is what we did not do during the first quarter. After that it was better. This allowed us to let every player of the bench play and let the main players rest, like my inside players. They will have a huge job against Great Britain on Wednesday. The goal was to win and not have injuries. It was the case, this is a good point."

Kim Mestdagh, Belgium
"For our team it was really important to win. A victory is always good. After two losses, this victory was an obligation! Now, we have not yet played to our best level but we played a good game with a good team spirit. This has also allowed us to have every player play and score. We had a really quiet second half. It was really important for us mentally because Wednesday against the British it will be a capital game."
