GAME REPORT

Great Britain Continue Their Flying Start

It's two wins in as many games for new Great Britain play-caller Peter Buckle after he masterminded a 78-53 success against F.Y.R. of Macedonia in Group B of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The Australian coach watched his team produce another fast start which was reminiscent of their form in the previous game against Belgium and that provided the foundation for victory in Kavadarci.

Flowing with confidence from her star role during her first summer outing, playmaker Rachael Vanderwal continued to orchestrate the plays and handed out a super seven assists for the Brits.

Their success was also due to a rapid-fire opening which saw the versatile Stephanie Gandy put the visiting side 21-11 to the good and into the box-seat.

They then strengthened their grip on proceedings with a devastating run at the start of the second period which took the game away from the home side.

Great Britain registered a stunning 16 consecutive points to move 39-13 in front when Stefanie Collins converted from downtown.

While F.Y.R. of Macedonia composed themselves for the second half, the damage had already been done.

Krisi Givens claimed 21 points as she tried to inspire a fight-back, but only Aleksandra Stojanovska managed to scrape into double-figures alongside her.

Forward Temi Fagbenle finished with 15 points for Great Britain.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: F.Y.R. of Macedonia vs. Great Britain

Peter Buckle, Great Britain Head Coach
"The first half was very good for us, and I think we presented a good team-play to get it. F.Y.R. of Macedonia played much better in the second half and we must give them credit because they got to 53 points at the end. We have to keep our focus, and have to prepare well for the next match. To be real, Lithuania is a very good team, but we showed that we can also play really well, and I think we can get the win."

Azania Stewart, Great Britain
"We managed to hold them to only 19 points in the first half and I think that is a great achievement for us that brought us the win. It is an important win, and I think we are ready for the big match against Lithuania."

Goran Jovanovic, F.Y.R. of Macedonia Head Coach
"In the first match against Lithuania, we played good only in the first half. Now we were good only in the second. I hope that we can put together a whole match, and we will manage to get a win. The consistency is our biggest problem by now, and I think one of the reasons for that is the fact that our team is very young and every match played now serves as great experience to the players. I'm sure it will be better. We have to stay focused, play as we know, and I'm sure we will manage to get us the first win."

Andzelika Mitrasinovik, F.Y.R. of Macedonia
"We were really bad in the first half. I think it was the pressure, because we wanted to perform well in front of our home fans, but we did the exact opposite during the first half. We made too many mistakes on offence, and weren't aggressive enough on defence. I'm sure it will be better in the next matches. We now travel to Belgium, and I'm hopeful that we can win that match."
