GAME REPORT

Lithuania Keep Belgium At Bay

12. Vita Kuktiene (Kibirkstis-Vici Vilnius)
Vilnius forward Vita Kuktiene made four of her seven three-point attempts

Some sharp-shooting from 18-point Vita Kuktiene helped unbeaten Lithuania to fend off Belgium 77-67 as they claimed their second win in Group B of the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The veteran dropped four triples en-route to her game-topping score as Lithuania took full advantage of another dry spell offensively from the Belgians who are without a win to their name heading into their third fixture of the campaign.

Belgium slipped to a loss in Great Britain last Sunday after scoring only two points in the last quarter and this time it was during the second period when they once again hit the rocks offensively.

Leading 21-16 after a positive opening and successive scores from Julie Vanloo, another offensive drought left Belgium with a meagre six points to their name in almost 12 minutes.

That handed the initiative to Lithuania, who needed no second invitation.

And, with Santa Okockyte inking a nice cameo of 11 points from five-of-six shooting, Lithuania had enough in their armoury to slowly pull clear.

However, despite moving 41-35 ahead, Lithuania witnessed their lead evaporate as Noemie Mayombo completed a tremendous ‘and-1' play to get Belgium back on level terms at 53-53.

But, Lithuania then got their noses back in front and that is exactly where they remained for the remainder of the night as they sealed the deal with an 11-5 run to finish the contest.

Vanloo had 15 points and three steals for Belgium.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Belgium vs. Lithuania

Daniel Goethals, Belgium Head Coach
"In my opinion, the Lithuanian team is among the top ten in Europe. It's a huge team, very tall. Our job tonight was also hard. I cannot blame my team for anything. They played a fantastic game. We stayed in the game until the last minute. Our progression is very clear. We began the match more aggressive than last Sunday in Great Britain. The deception was there after our loss in Great Britain. The reaction of the girls tonight shows that we have values, fighting spirit and resources."

Jana Raman, Belgium
"Being able to stay at the level of the Lithuanian team is a great performance for us. We started this game very well. It's a very strong team. Of course, we are disappointed with the loss but we have shown what we are able to do something. That gives us a lot of confidence. We have to improve. We are young, we learn during every game."

Mantas Serniu, Lithuania Head Coach
"We've had a very short preparation but we worked hard. We expected such a good game of the Belgian team. We've had too many ups and downs today. Our strength was that we could stay calm in every situation. It was certainly not our best game. We were not good enough in transition, but we were able to play our game for the last minutes. It was very important. I'm sure that we'll improve game after game. Our game at home against the Belgian team will not be the same, but of course, Belgium is also getting better."

Mante Kvederaviciute, Lithuania
"We were too lazy tonight. I cannot say that our game against F.Y.R. of Macedonia last Sunday was too easy because we prepare every game very hard, but we can play better. We have to run more, faster. Our decisions were not always the good ones. We stayed calm even when Belgium came to 53-53 at the end of the game. We are very happy. Two victories aafter two games, it's a perfect start."
