GAME REPORT

Great Britain Complete Belgian Shutdown

Rachael Vanderwal (Great Britain)
Rachael Vanderwal was in exquisite form for Great Britain

Great Britain got their EuroBasket Women 2nd Qualification Round campaign off to a perfect start after throwing a defensive blanket over Belgium in the final quarter to take a hard fought 56-49 Group B win.

The home side trailed by a point heading into the last quarter, but some outstanding defence restricted Belgium to a solitary basket during the last ten minutes.

Rachel Vanderwal was also central to their opening day success with a superb display, setting the tone at both ends of the court.

The guard finished with  17 points on the back of a superb shooting display which included sinking the dagger triple with just over 90 seconds remaining, which ultimately sealed the deal.

Great Britain started brightly in the game with a high-tempo opening and stormed into a 16-10 advantage as Vanderwal completed an exquisite ‘and-1' play.

Firmly on top, forward Temi Fagbenle gave Great Britain their first double-digit lead at 31-21, but Belgium responded in style as Julie Vanloo nailed a three-pointer which ignited a 9-0 burst of scoring.

Behind 34-33 at the start of the second half after clawing their way back into contention, Belgium continued their good work and surged into the lead after a 7-2 opening to the third quarter.

They still led 47-46 at the end of the third period, but had no answer to the impressive defensive wall of Great Britain down the stretch.

This was epitomised by a huge block from Stephanie Gandy and while Great Britain weren't fluent themselves offensively, they had the ace in the pack in the shape of Vanderwal who got them over the line.

Sofie Hendrickx was the only Belgium player to reach double-digits with 10 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Great Britain vs. Belgium

Daniel Goethals, Belgium Head Coach
"First of all congratulations to the coach and Great Britain team on the victory. It was not the kind of game I was maybe expecting. It was very physical and we had a tough time offensively which was the difference [between the two teams]."

Sofie Hendrickx, Belgium
"Towards the end of the game we were really struggling, whereas Great Britain found the right plays. We only scored two points in the last quarter and it's clear there is a lot of work ahead for us."

Peter Buckle, Great Britain Head Coach
"The atmosphere made a big difference down the stretch for us - it was a huge difference in getting the win. Everyone stepped up and it showed our chemistry."

Rachael Vanderwal, Great Britain
"This wasn't just about getting the win, it was about us getting into a groove for the players and we still have some room to grow yet."
