GAME REPORT

Perfect Poland Book Final Round Ticket

Katarzyna Krezel (Poland)
Veteran Katarzyna Krezel led the way for Poland with 17 points

Having missed out at EuroBasket Women 2013, a jubilant Poland secured a 65-51 success against Slovenia in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round to reach the Final Round next summer.

Registering their fifth consecutive win in Group A, Jacek Winnicki and his unbeaten team cemented their place for Hungary and Romania thanks to 17 points from Katarzyna Krezel and a powerful defensive effort.

Holding Slovenia to a meagre 19 points in the first half, Poland laid the foundation to finish the task after the interval, although having led by as many as 14 points, their advantage was halved early in the third quarter.

A renaissance by Slovenia got them back to 31-24 after a downtown conversion from Eva Komplet, but Poland pulled away again with Krezel making a triple of her own to put her team 15 in front late in the period.

While an 11-2 run for Slovenia across the final quarter-break had the home favourites briefly wobbling, Poland composed themselves for down the stretch where they eased across the finishing line to spark the celebrations.

Teenager Eva Lisec had 11 points for the losing side.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Poland vs. Slovenia

Tomo Oresnik, Slovenia Head Coach
"First of all I want to congratulate the home team. We didn't have anything to lose in this game. We went very tough and determined into it. We made too many fouls and didn't concentrate on the offence. This was very good for the Polish team. We tried to be better in the second half, change our defence. We came quite close, but in the end Poland was better."

Teja Oblak, Slovenia
"I would like to congratulate the home team and wish them all the best for the EuroBasket Women. Poland scored a lot of easy points and I think it was the key to their win."

Jacek Winnicki, Poland Head Coach
"We have one more game, which we want to win and get the first place in the group. We knew how important this game was for us. The Slovenian team had nothing to lose. We played very good in defence for 40 minutes with only few mistakes. We stopped the guests at 51 points and I'm very happy with that."

Katarzyna Krezel, Poland
"It was a very good game for us, especially on defence. We made some mistakes, but basketball is a game of mistakes. Every player that was on the court gave something for this win. For complete happiness we would like to win in Slovakia."
