GAME REPORT

Red-Hot Start Helps Poland Past Slovenia

A scorching start proved vital for Jacek Winnicki and his Poland players who collected a hard-fought and precious 68-59 Group A success against Slovenia in the EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round.

The visitors made a strong start count after they raced out of the blocks to find their offensive rhythm from the outset.

This helped them to forge a 23-13 advantage via a score by Martyna Koc, a basket which was part of a sparkling 13-2 run across the first and second quarter break.

With Poland in the ascendency, Slovenia struggled to find a stable foothold in the game but did enough to reduce the damage.

Down by six points heading into the second half of the contest, Slovenia continued in their quest to erase the arrears, but Poland were able to keep them at arms' length for much of the third quarter.

It wasn't until Teja Oblak scored six consecutive points for Slovenia that they were able to finally apply some pressure to their opponents, notably making it a one-shot game at 50-48 early in the final period.

However Poland wrestled the momentum away from Slovenia down the stretch when they cranked up their defensive effort.

This, combined with some Slovenian foul trouble, facilitated seven unanswered points - a run which gave them the impetus required to edge to victory.

Justyna Zurowska top scored for Poland with 14 points, while Ewelina Kobryn made her eagerly awaited return to the national team, and added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Nika Baric contributed 19 points in defeat, while 18-year-old rising star Eva Lisec had 13 boards.

It was a bitter-sweet victory for Poland, as Magdalena Skorek went down with an injury and had to be carried out in the third quarter.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Slovenia vs. Poland

Tomo Oresnik, Slovenia Head Coach
"We started the game with too much respect towards our opponent and we were not aggressive. We were down, but then we started to play all or nothing. We came close, but that was not enough. I am very pleased with the game that we showed in the last 30 minutes. My players showed heart. Congratulations to Poland on the win."

Nika Baric, Slovenia
"When you are 17 points down, it is very hard to come back. In the first 12 minutes we were too scared. Poland was well prepared for us."

Jacek Winnicki, Poland Head Coach
"I am very happy that we won this game, which was very important for us. We knew that this would be tough game. We started the game very well. In the second half we picked up our play and won."

Ewelina Kobryn, Poland
"That was a really tough game and really important for our team. Now it will be much easier going into our next game against Slovakia."
