GAME REPORT

Israel Claim Opening Game

8. Shay Doron (Israel)
Shay Doron led Israel with 19 points and seven assists

By defeating Germany 68-57 on Friday afternoon, Israel made history by winning the first-ever EuroBasket Women 2015 First Qualification Round game.

Liron Cohen started the action for Israel, nailing a three as the tournament hosts raced out to a 15-5 lead.

But a Svenja Brunckhorst fast break two-pointer spurred Germany into action as they went on a 12-0 run to be leading by two, 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The end of the quarter could not have come sooner for the Israelis who regained their composure and turned the two-point deficit at the end of 10 minutes into a two-point lead at the break (30-28).

Following the half Israel eased away from their German counterparts to be leading by as much as 14 in the third quarter.

Baskets to Judith Schmidt and 17-year-old Ama Degbeon at the end of the third period gave Germans hope, however the nine-point margin proved too big to breach in the final frame.

A regular on the European women's circuit, Shay Doron, led scoring with 19 points to go with seven assists. Katia Lavitsky and Jennifer Fleischer each had 12 whilst Cohen chipped in with 11.

The best of the Germans were Anne Breitreiner and Katharina Fikiel, both finishing with nine points.

On Saturday Israel play F.Y.R. of Macedonia whilst Germany take on Portugal.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Israel vs. Germany

Germany Head Coach Alexandra Maerz
"We expected them to come out strong and be better than in the game when we played them in London. They were very good, they had more focus and more heart and more will and that made the difference, in every situation in the game. We had no confidence and no will. I think this was a key game for Israel as well as for us. Portugal will be a very difficult opponent to play but being the first game it was the key so congrats they deserve the win."

Germany player Katharina Fikiel
"We didn't play as good as we should have and Israel were definitely better so they deserved the win. I hope that tomorrow, against Portugal, we will play better and gain our first win in the tournament."

Israel Head Coach Eli Rabi
"We started the game very well, but then we helped them come back into the game and lost some confidence. I'm glad that we managed to open a lead in the 3rd quarter and hang on. We'll try to win tomorrow and see how things go from there."

Israel player Jennifer Fleischer
"I am always happy to help our team. We won today but there are still two more wins to gain, four to be exact. My dad was in the crowd and it was the first time he saw me play in five years, so it gave me a lot of joy and motivation today."
