Using a six-person rotation, F.Y.R of Macedonia have won their opening Group D game in the EuroBasket Women 2015 First Qualification Round, going past Portugal 60-56.
Following a sluggish start that saw the eventual winners trailing by eight points (11-3), a three followed by a jump shot by Slavica Dimovska had F.Y.R of Macedonia rolling, and by the end of the opening frame, leading by a point (17-16).
Dimovska was an essential cog in F.Y.R of Macedonia's win, leading all scorers with 19 points.
Tenacious defence coupled with some wayward shooting from the Portuguese in the second frame allowed F.Y.R of Macedonia to ease away from their opponents as the lead extended to six (31-25) by the half.
Portugal was not to enjoy any more fortune at the offensive end of the court in the second frame as their offensive output dropped to eight points in the third quarter, allowing F.Y.R of Macedonia a comfortable 11-point lead going into the last period.
Portugal kept the game interesting with a three-pointer to Ana Oliveira bringing the deficit back to four with 21 seconds to play. But a pair of free throws to Elena Radenkovic steadied the ship and confirmed the victory.
Radenkovic supported Dimovska with 12 points whilst Monika Gavriloska had 14, alongside 13 rebounds.
Veteran Carla Freitas led a losing effort with 14 points.
On Saturday Portugal enter a must-win game against the other day one losers, Germany, whilst F.Y.R. of Macedonia take on Israel in a battle to go clear at the top of the table.
