GAME REPORT

Bulgaria Get Off On Right Foot

23. Daniela Peteva (Bulgaria)
Daniela Peteva was the impetus behind Bulgaria's win

Bulgaria have used home court advantage to their benefit to record a 57-52 win over Slovenia to start their EuroBasket Women 2015 First Qualification Round campaign on a winning note.

In a topsy-turvy encounter that experienced nine lead changes, Bulgaria grabbed the lead for good in the final minute of the third quarter as Slovenia could do no more than stay close to their hosts throughout the final exchanges.

Bulgaria were making the most of the early exchanges, leading by as much as eight (26-18) midway through the second frame but with Eva Rupnik providing eight points in the run into the half, the lead was diced to two by the time the halftime hooter sounded.

Teja Oblak took over from Rupnik in the third period as the Slovenians appeared to have their hosts rattled. However, a critical timeout from Georgi Boshkov settled the Bulgarians, and when they returned to the court Daniela Peteva shouldered the responsibility of getting her team home, making her side's final two points of the third frame before providing eight of her team's 12 final quarter points.

Peteva finished the night with 12 points, the same as teammate Radostina Dimitrova. Leading the way with 18 and seven rebounds was Milena Tomova. Showing dominance under the basket with 13 boards was Stefka Miteva.

For Slovenia Oblak finished with 13 points.

On Saturday Bulgaria have a rest whilst Slovenia look to get off the mark when they take on Switzerland.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Bulgaria vs. Slovenia

Slovenia player Teja Oblak

"It was a very hard game. Hosts played hard defence. We had our chances, but we should have played smarter at the end of the game."

Slovenia Head Coach Tomo Oresnik

"It was an equal game, we stayed good on the court. We fought till the end. But at the end we didn't have such quality as the hosts. The Bulgarian team is more experienced than us. They hit some hard shots. We tried to do our best, but we made some mistakes. Congratulations to the hosts. Today they were the better team. We must stay concentrated, tomorrow we have another game. We have to win. I think we deserve to leave Bulgaria with at least one win."

Bulgaria Head Coach Georgi Boshkov

"We are really pleased. We won against a very strong team. Last year they were really close to qualifying to EuroBasket Women. We were ahead the whole game. I am very thankful to my team for the heart and strong will, especially on defence. This is our weapon now. Now we have to stay focused for the game on Sunday. I hope we will win this game against Switzerland. They have an experienced team and are very ambitious."

Bulgaria player Milena Tomova

"I am happy that we won this hard game. It is a small step to the final success. I hope we will win first place in this group."
