Estonia Make Statement In Opener

Merike Anderson narrowly missed out on a tirple-double for Estonia

Estonia have made a statement to complete day one action of the EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualification Round, blowing past hosts Luxembourg 79-53.

Running out to a 24-7 lead by the end of the opening quarter, the Estonians never looked like being challenged by the Group A hosts as five players went on to finish in double figures.

With only 19 field goals hitting the mark, it was always going to be a long day at the office for Luxembourg as Estonia took ownership of the paint whilst also only giving up eight shots from the charity stripe.

Veteran shooting guard Merike Anderson was the most impressive of all the Estonians recording a +/- of +30, narrowly missing out on a triple double, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Mirjam Nikolai was playing a key role in Estonia's back court, leading scoring with 15 points along with six assists. Topping off the backcourt dominance was Pirgit Püü who had 14 points. Up front Viive-Kai Rebane also made 14 whilst Laina Mesila-Kaarmann ended with 10.

21-year-old Magaly Meynadier was the pick of the hosts, finishing with 13 points on five-for-nine shooting.

On Saturday Luxembourg look to resurrect their campaign against a Greek side who were lucky to escape with a win on Friday, whilst Estonia seek to put one foot firmly in the next round when they take on the Netherlands.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Estonia vs. Luxembourg

Luxembourg Head Coach Hermann Paar

Size is not an excuse, we have to play our basketball. We were not rebounding and our defence was very weak.

Our offence was not there but we had to pick it up on defence. Now we prepare for the next game and you will see a better team

Luxembourg Player Liz Schmitz

"We lost the game in the first quarter. We were not ready to play, we didn't stick to the game plan. It was hard to get into the game.  The difference in size was a big problem for our team in rebounding."

Estonia Head Coach Jaanus Levkoi

"Rebounding was our strength. The Estonian organisation of the game was better. We got good open shots. The games against the other teams will be a bigger challenge for our team, but we will fight to win."

Estonia Player Merike Anderson

"Luxembourg is a small team but has a good fighting spirit. Estonia had problems to find the rhythm of the game. The next games will be tougher but we will fight."
